Doctor Who
Does anyone have any idea how to make a TARDIS cake? Would just an ordinary sponge cake with blue icing work? Or should it be chocolate cake for added deliciousness? Does chocolate go okay with blue icing do you think? ... how would I even *do* the icing? Other than covering it blue I mean. I need the doors/windows/police phone box part... and the... flashy light on top.

There was one on [info]food_porn a while ago, I think. I think you need to use thick fondanty icing, not just the glazy kind.

Vanilla sponge'd probably go better with blue icing. Chocolate and blue - sounds a little sickening! You could use other kinds of lollies for the details, though not many come in blue...

Google brought up this method, which looks pretty good. (Though I think the frosting needs to be thicker, you can see the yellow cake underneath in parts. And the cake's edges could stand some trimming to square them off.)

There's also this, but it doesn't have any how-to for the icing. (Looks like they used fondant -- which would look neater, but which is harder than frosting -- and hand-shaped the triangley bit on top.)

For a flat cake you could do this, minus the jelly babies of course. A cut sheet cake would be easier to ice and be less likely to collapse than Cake Tower.

There is also this, but it looks needlessly complicated.

Good luck! :D

Yep I'm going to do a flat cake, just the front view of the TARDIS.

In lieu of fondant, which I think tastes like soap, try using marzipan. It rolls nicely and can be made different colors. It also goes quite well with chocolate cake. If you really, really want fondant I suggest finding a recipe that is marshmallow based as opposed to buying some in the store that will probably contain glycerin. [Hence the "soapy" taste."]

I ... don't think I want fondant *or* marzipan, unless I'm missing what fondant is. I was just going to use... icing.

I know this isn't what you're looking for, but I couldn't resist a Dalek cake!
